King Ahmose - Regaining an Empire
The first Pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty, King Ahmose took over the throne after both his father and brother died freeing Egypt of the Hyksos. The battle had been a difficult one after a long period of foreign rule. This period began when thousands of Syrians and Palestinians had migrated to Egypt and started becoming more and more powerful. At one point they became even more powerful than the natives, and this gave rise to the Hyksos kings. They commanded through Egyptian kings who were no more than puppet rulers... until one king decided he'd had enough of it! That king is the father Seqenenre Tao. He waged a war on them and died from massive head wounds. Kind Seqenenre's other son Kamose took over the battle and was almost successful, but he also died, leaving our young king to finish the job. And he did! He took over and finally expelled them. Egypt was once again back in the hands of the Egyptians, and in the hands of this particular (and quite young) Egyptian. Although he reigned for almost 25 years, there aren't that many records of him. What we do know is that his strategy for securing Egypt after the war was two-fold.
First, he sealed off the borders with Syria and also brought Nubia back into strict Egyptian rule. Second, he began giving a lot of responsibility to the local governors. He gave away land and built temples to gain the favor of the different nomes. As with most royalty in ancient Egypt, he married within the family - he had many of his sisters as wives. He had many children, including his successor Amenhotep I. When he died his mummy was one of those hidden in
the Royal Mummy Caches.
