Travel Guide Egypt

This Travel Guide Egypt is a brief overview of the different aspects of visiting the land of the Pharaohs. There are just so many ways to see and experience this country that it would be helpful for you to first get a general idea of what you want to see before tailoring a travel plan.

I personally love to just pick up and go to the country I am visiting without a lot of planning, but I do end up missing a lot of great hidden gems that I learn about after I return. So I do recommend you consider all the possibilities first before you make the leap.

First of all, I want to give you an idea of what to expect without romanticizing the whole thing. Some inside information that travel agents may not tell you... Click here for an overview of positive and negative points of traveling here from a tourist perspective.

Here’s a list of general facts about Egypt:

Egypt Flag Official Name: Arab Republic of Egypt. In Arabic (the official language) Egypt is actually called “Misr”. In ancient Egypt however, the country was called “Kemet”, meaning black land (because of the black silt deposits around the Nile.

Location: The North East corner of Africa with the Mediterranean Sea above and the Red Sea to the Right. It has borders with (clockwise) Palestine & Israel, Sudan and Libya. It also has the river Nile running through its middle.

Official Language: Arabic. English and French are widely spoken in the modern parts of the cities as well as the more touristic areas. In some resorts you will find a variety of other languages as well, such as Italian and German.

Capital City: Cairo, or “Al Qahira” in Arabic. This wasn’t always so, as in ancient Egypt our capital cities were Memphis and Thebes.

Check out this page on Cairo City History to learn more about the largest metropolis in the Middle East (it's quite a long page so get comfortable!). Also, take a look at this Cairo Map of Important Sites and Touristic Spots with descriptions, it opens in a new window. I'd advice you open both at the same time so you can reference the map while reading the history.

Currency: The Egyptian Pound or EGP with the sign of E£.

Population: In 2010 it was estimated at 79,089,650.

Religion: About 90% of the population is labelled as Muslim and 10% as Christian (mainly Coptic Christian).

Time Zone: GMT + 2

Climate:The seasons are not very well pronounced, with quite a long and hot summer and a short and mild winter.

International Dialling Code: 002

This is just a brief Travel Guide Egypt introduction, I’ll be adding lots of content about travelling through this country I call home, so stay tuned for the updates!

What Egyptian city contains one-third of the world's ancient artifacts, is on the Nile, and has majestic temples such as the Karnak and Hatshepsut temples? You guessed it, it's magical Luxor.

Next on the menu will be focussing on one of the Oases of Egypt, which is right up my alley – you’ll see why...

...Click here to learn about the magnificent Oasis of Siwa.

Next is a page with brief descriptions of the resorts and towns located on the western shoreline of the beautiful Red Sea.

I'm planning on writing a small Travel Guide Egypt ebook at some point in 2012 which will have all of the above information and more. I just need to travel around more and then sit down and write. I'll let you know how it goes!
